Does Sam Hinkie deserve some blame for Sixers depth issues?

I might catch some heat for this, but it’s been on my mind the past few days.

The Sixers have been showing their true colors lately and it has a lot to do with their lack of depth on the bench. It seems almost any time the starters get some rest, the bench is just biding time until they can come back in.

People keep pointing out the fact Brian Colangelo did almost nothing in his tenure outside of trade up for Fultz. While this is a HUGE source of the Sixers issues, I can’t help but feel former management deserves some blame as well.

From 2013-2015, the Sixers had 12 second round picks. Of those second round picks, not a single player is currently on the Sixers roster.

Here’s the list of players selected in the second round between 2012-2015:

Glen Rice

Pierre Jackson

KJ McDaniels

Jerami Grant

Russ Smith

Vasilije Micic

Nemanja Dangubic

Willy Hernangomez

Richaun Holmes

Arturas Gudaitis

JP Tokoto

Luka Mitrovic

It feels nit picky to complain about missed second round picks, but to have 12 picks in three drafts and not have anything to show for it is disappointing in hindsight.

Hinkie helped set this team up with more star power than its ever had, but you need more than stars to win a championship. The Process accomplished its main goal, but the only quality role players the Sixers were able to find and develop along the way were TJ McConnell and Robert Covington.

Maybe this is actually Colangelo’s fault for giving up on some of these guys too soon, or maybe it’s Brett Brown’s for not being able to better develop his players, I’m not sure. It just seems like all those second round picks were a missed opportunity and the Sixers are currently paying the price.
